So I hadn't really noticed these 280Z wheels before. I was trying to find out if there were any reproduction Fairlady Z 432 wheels (bottom picture) being made, for my 240Z. I can't find anything more than rumors and some people had made ($$$). So I saw these on a 280Z and I thought if I painted/anodized them black they might not be too far off. Well it turns out they are not aluminum rims, they are fucking wheel covers, they fooled me from pictures, never seen them in real life. I saw a picture up close and I saw the steelie behind them....upset. I heard a company in Japan made the replicas but I have looked and they don't seem to be listed. They only made 280 432s and something like 18 432Rs so they weren't a mass produced wheel as far as I know.

They're good looking hubcaps for sure, Only can tell from up close or if you see the steelie.

I have the original slotted alloys that came on my car in 72'. Technically my wheels were a dealer option and were not on cars in Japan. Lots of people chose them in the USA instead of the ugly caps they offered. They are decent caps but I want better rims.

Unfortunately there were no factory alloy wheels from Datsun until 1978. All of the Z cars had wheel covers. Everything before that was a dealer add on. The '78 alloys were really rare. These:

Every other early Z you see with a Z wheel comes from a later model, most of them get the 280zx six spoke since they're light and sturdy. Otherwise it's aftermarket all the way.

If you want to change things up on the cheap, you could always do a junkyard swap from a S130 or Z31 4-lug, bolt pattern is the same, I believe. The 280ZX Iron Cross wheels are pretty close to that style.

Thanks, you've made me cry. You see, I had a blue '77 280Z exactly like that one...

Dammit.

I have nice wheels, I just wanted something to make black and get closer to the 432s. I don't really have a problem. I just got a rear disk kit so I have that to do. I'm going to Japan in May so I will ask around there, see what I can find.

I have an Orange early 72', it has series 1 stuff on it, its like they were transitioning parts in the factory. I saw a 280 the other day, there are only three 240s near me that I see from time to time.
